The first thing you will probably notice when watching this video is that the early stages are very ugly. Because this was created with a mouse, I didn't have the luxury of pressure sensitive shading and other benefits of a pen, so I find it best to work rough and pull it together in later stages.
Before you begin work on your own masterpiece, it may be helpful to develop a feel for the tools and techniques you will be using. It will take practice and experimentation so why not try them out on existing artwork or even a scanned photo, just to see what they do and to develop a feel for them.
Prepare to spend plenty of time on your image and expect to use the undo function many times! And as always, remember to back up your work as you progress.

Welcome to this video tutorial for beginners. The intention of these videos is to demonstrate the basic tools and techniques I use to paint my images in a way that can be handled by (almost) anybody. Regardless of your mouse co-ordination, your sketching abilities, or your knowledge of Photoshop, this tutorial can be adapted to your level of expertise. Meanwhile, it will help you to better understand the techniques behind the more detailed “Me and Louie’s Sister” tutorial on this site.
