In this regular feature I will take time out to answer some of the questions I am asked regarding my work, my tools and various painting and graphic design techniques. If you have any questions you want to ask, you can contact me at: devotion-graphics@blueyonder.co.uk and I will do my best to answer them in future pages.
QUESTION: I have been following your 3d Logo Tutorial, but I can't select the text. How can I select the contents of a layer?
ANSWER: If you hold the control key and click the layer's thumbnail it should make an accurate selection of the text or anything within that layer.
QUESTION: How long should I spend on a painting?
ANSWER: It varies so much, but when I start any picture I expect to spend anything from 10 to 40 hours on it, maybe more. There are some amazing speed painters out there who can come up with great concepts in a couple of hours, but unless you have their talent and experience, it is way too ambitious to expect results this quickly.
One of the worst mistakes you can make is to expect too much too soon. You will always be disappointed when it doesn't come together. Be prepared to work on your piece over several days, even weeks, whenever you feel inspired. You can keep changing it and fixing it until you are happy. Each time you paint, you will get quicker as you'll learn from many of your mistakes.
